St. George 1920

Historic Video Series: St. George Utah Temple (1927-1937)

Update:

I have been able to ascertain that the annex was reconstructed starting immediately after the fire that destroyed the annex. As a consequence, I have identified this as the state of the annex after reconstruction. Accordingly, I have moved the date of this video from 1920-1927 to instead be 1927-1938.

So, after posting this video I realized that, chronologically, I should have posted another video first. So that one will come next week instead. I guess.

Changes to the temple in this video include the removal of the parapets at the top of the stone portion of the tower, these were replaced with the fence like structure we know now. Also in this is the painted parapets on the rest of the temple, which were painted to look like sandstone. The annex itself was redesigned both inside and out, though the exterior structure was kept from the burned out original.

Logan Utah 1918

Historic Temple Video: Logan Utah Temple (1918-1948)

Well, as Logan goes, this is a fairly small change. The annex entry was extended, though the front look and door layout was extended, and a new wing was added off the back of the temple Annex. This particular layout to the temple would remain in place for the next 30 years, marking the longest single span of un-altered temple for Logan so far.

Provo Tabernacle 1917

Historic Temple Video Series: Provo Utah Tabernacle [Provo City Center Temple] (1917-1950)

Not too long after the Provo Tabernacle was dedicated, the tall center tower caused the roof start to sag. This was due to there being no direct support for the tower, as the tower rested directly on the roof trusses, which in turn rested on the exterior walls.

The tower pedestal would stay atop the temple for another 30 or so years before being completely removed.

Logan utah 1915

Historic Temple Videos: Logan Utah Temple (1915-1918)

Logan Utah Temple as it would have looked after an annex expansion in 1915. By this time, most of the pink colored ‘whitewash’ had weathered away, thought there is some evidence that the lower course remained white for some time. This model features a new entrance on the annex that would be expanded just a few short years later. Also of note is the towers that were a tan color for most of the first half of the 20th century.

Uintah Stake Tabernacle- Vernal Utah Temple

Historic Temple Video Series: Uintah Stake Tabernacle (1907)

Dedicated in 1907, the Uintah Stake Tabernacle in Vernal Utah would serve for about 40-50years before a new Stake Center made it unnecessary. The Church had plans to demolish the building, but local residents petitioned for it to be preserved. In the end the Church chose to make it a new temple instead.

This is, of course, my attempt to recreate the tabernacle as it would have looked than.

Historic Temple Video: Salt Lake Temple (1904-1911)

Today’s video is a 1904 update to the Salt Lake Temple. This particular video is the essence of nit-picky, as the whole reason it exists is a 18×8 foot vestibule added on to the front of the temple annex. I only learned of this addition last month, and just in time to work it into the Historic Temple video line-up. The following changes have occurred on temple square since the last Salt Lake Temple video was posted:

  • New vestibule/entry on the annex,
  • Conservatory (greenhouse) completed
  • Old Greenhouse (remains of Endowment house) removed
  • New greenhouse built in North West Corner
  • Bureau of Information constructed on south lot (octagonal building)
  • Temple is a darker gray, due to soot fouling from the Boiler House
  • Taller Chimney on boiler house in unsuccessful attempt to reduce soot fouling

Historic Video Series: St. George Utah Temple (1900-1927)

UPDATE

Due to recent research, I have revised the date of this video from 1900-1927.

Well, we are back into the changes made to the St. George Temple, of which, there were many. Today’s video is most about changes to the annex.

Right around the turn of the century, the water tower was removed. The water tower had supplied water to the font, and was determined to no longer be necessary. The water tower was removed and the annex, already in place around the temple, was remodeled and expanded into the space where the tower had been.
